PLAY THE GAMES 2023: STORIA DELLE SPECIAL OLYMPIC
Eunice Kennedy Shriver (1921 – 2009) è stata una filantropa americana, discendente di una famiglia passata alla storia (il fratello maggiore John Fitzgerald è stato il 35esimo Presidente degli Stati Uniti). Consegue una laurea in sociologia e inizia presto a lavorare per il Dipartimento di Stato USA: la passione per la giustizia, tuttavia, soggiace ad interessi di natura sociale e legati alla sua sfera privata.
Eunice è infatti affezionatissima alla sorella maggiore, Rosemary, affetta da disabilità intellettiva e per questo ignorata dal resto della famiglia. Le due sorelle crescono praticando moltissime attività insieme – nuoto, corsa, vela, calcio…occasioni ludiche ma anche agrodolci, specie per Eunice, che nel giro di breve tempo si rende conto delle condizioni di isolamento e limitazione che affliggono le persone con disabilità statunitensi.
I pomeriggi in compagnia di Rosemary ispirano però un cambiamento. Nel 1962 Eunice organizza, nel giardino di casa, un torneo sportivo rivolto esclusivamente a persone con disabilità intellettiva. Battezzato ‘Camp Shriver’, quel campo estivo rivela che lo sport è un territorio d’incontro felice per chi esperisce l’emarginazione. Il destino di Camp Shriver è quello di crescere: nel luglio 1968, infatti, si tramuta nei primi Giochi Internazionali Special Olympics, che si tengono a Chicago, Illinois. Nel discorso che tiene durante la Cerimonia d’Apertura, Kennedy sottolinea che “le persone con disabilità intellettive possono essere atleti eccezionali, che attraverso lo sport possono realizzare il loro potenziale”.
La visione di una singola donna si tramuta, negli anni, in movimento globale. Oggi, infatti, le Special Olympics coinvolgono quasi cinque milioni di persone con disabilità intellettive e cognitive in 200 paesi; in Italia, da marzo a ottobre, Play the Games porta l’iniziativa in 14 regioni differenti, con un calendario di eventi dedicati a 19 discipline e a quasi 6000 atleti.
L’appuntamento a Biella è fissato tra venerdì 12 e domenica 14 maggio: oggi, sabato 13, riflettori puntati, fra gli altri, su Francesco ‘Ciccio’ Graziani, che alle ore 17:00 prenderà parte alle premiazioni Special Football al Campo 53° Fanteria. L’Ambassador di Fondazione FILA Museum è da sempre promotore dello sport come pratica inclusiva e noi siamo a dir poco orgogliosi della sua presenza!
